October 2014 – Happy first birthday to our sweet Winter!

Happy birthday, sweet girl.  It’s hard to believe that an entire year has passed since the day of your birth.  How have we already known you outside the womb for 12 whole months?  You are a joy to our lives.  Your daddy and I cannot even imagine what life would be like for us had you never been added to this family.  You changed the dynamic of the Lute house.  We used to be a couple, and now we are a FAMILY.

Milestones: *Wants* to learn how to walk, though not quite there yet, rarely crawls anymore, walks everywhere with the help of her push toys or holding onto furniture, learned how to wave using both hands simultaneously (bending her fingers to her palms), helps me get her dressed (pushes her arms through the sleeves, lifts her foot up to put pant leg on, etc), has 4 teeth (two on top and two on bottom).

Sleep: Sleeps from 8pm-8am (12 hours), and takes two daytime naps (approx. 4-5 hours total), typically 9:30/10am-12pm and 2:30-4:30/5pm.  I know that some babies transition from 2 naps to 1 nap after a year, but my goal is to keep pushing for 2 naps until at least 15-18 months.

Best Moment: Seeing how happy she was to eat her first cake!  Also, she got to spend time with her Aunt Melody and Uncle  Andrew when they visited during her birthday.  It was fun seeing them interact.  It’s such a treat to see family.

Worst Moment: Seeing my baby very ill, read more below…

Health:  Winter got VERY sick 3 days after her birthday.  On Monday we noticed she was warm, so we checked for a fever, and we were shocked to discover she was running a 103.5 temperature.  We panicked!  Well, I panicked.  Over the course of the next 4-5 days, she kept spiking up to 103.5 and once to 104.  Motrin, cool baths, lots of breastfeeding and finally antibiotics were her treatments.  It was the antibiotics that finally helped her get better.  That was very scary as a mom, but looking back, I am so grateful that she is ok and healthy now.

Eating:  Because Winter was sick, she was exclusively breastfeeding for several days as she had no appetite for other foods.  After she was done being sick, she wanted to continue nursing 6-7 times per day.  I, as her mom, wanted to get back to our previous amount: 3 times per day.  We did finally get back to that, and now my goal is to get down to 2 times per day.  Aside from her sickness, she loves to EAT!  She has quite the appetite and could constantly put food away.  She loves cheese, yogurt, raisins, baby gold fish, corn, bread, any kind of fruit, chicken, black beans, etc.  She will tolerate vegetables if they are cooked.  She mainly wants to eat whatever WE are eating.

Likes: She laughs when Eric & I kiss, she loves clapping her hands, she loves to pull things out and create huge messes, she loves playing in the kitchen cabinets (Tupperware area), she loves cats, she loves books, she loves pushing her cruising toys around and taking laps around the dining table, she loves Lana – her bedtime (lamb wabbanub) pacifier, she loves getting tickled, she loves to LAUGH a lot—she has her full out belly laugh, her low pitched chuckle, and her fake laugh.  She loves to copy mommy.

Dislikes: Hates diaper changes, getting dressed and lately baths.

How Mommy is doing: Not going to lie, I was very emotional on her first birthday and may have cried on more than 2 occasions on that day.  Something happens to us new moms when we realize that our baby is growing up!  I love Winter so much, but it’s so hard to wrap my head around how quickly this is all going.  I just want it to slow down.  I want to soak in every second of her baby and toddler days.  Time, please slow down….I don’t want my baby to be grown before I know it!

Winter’s Cake Smash!

I can’t believe Winter turned 1 last week!

On her first birthday (10.10.14), I did a cake smash photo shoot with her.  I wanted to capture Winter’s first tastes of her birthday cake in a cute way.  Many of my friends have taken their 1 year olds to a photographer to do a photo shoot with their little one.  I wanted the same results without spending the hundreds of dollars!  So, thanks to Pinterest, I gathered my confidence to do it myself!

The cake smash photo shoot I did all DIY!  I baked and decorated the cake, made a $2 cake stand, bought paper for the background, made the banner, assembled the outfit she wore, took the photos myself and did all my own editing.  $$$ saved!  I’ll have to do a separate post about how I did the shoot all by myself instead of hiring someone.  Be looking for that!

We had a blast watching her demolish her cake.  She wasn’t shy….she dug right in!
